Well that happened quickly!
I’m sure last month was January so how on earth is it Christmas again already? It has been a huge 12 months at The Wine Society and once again we are back at the pointy end of the year and a time for us to step back from our day to day lives and be thankful for all the things that make the world such a beautiful place, such as family, friends, great weather and of course a nice glass of wine. A lot has changed this year at The Wine Society and a lot more is about to change (for the better) in the New Year. We will be launching a brand new website, as well as delivering increased personalisation, better wine offers, more great imports, sharper pricing, faster shipping and a new loyalty program that will truly reward you, our very special members. Stay tuned for big news in the New Year!
On the wine front, I have four very special picks for you, set out below. I always start Christmas with a great bottle of fizz and, being such a special time of year, it just has to be Champagne. The Lallier R.014 is a statement of refinement and class. With the base wine coming mostly from the 2014 vintage, it is looking sharp and, paired with some prawns or other shellfish at the start of your Christmas lunch, it will impress everyone at the table. Next up is a really serious bottle-aged Semillon from one of the best in the business. If there’s anything more Aussie than cold Hunter Sem on a hot day, I don’t know what it is. I also have something for you to go with the turkey. I simply love Pinot Noir and this Yarra Valley beauty from Mandala will have everyone in rapture. Last? A classic Australian! Of course we couldn’t leave Shiraz out. This Yangarra Shiraz is “... profoundly exciting, another masterpiece ... bloody gorgeous” and worthy of 97 points according to James Halliday. I’d have to agree; it's exciting and very, very good.
May you all have a happy and enjoyable Christmas and a New Year spent with great company and the beauty of super wine and the Aussie summer. Don’t forget to shoot through any feedback to firstname.lastname@example.org.
A soft, more approachable Hunter Valley Semillon exhibits aromas of lime and refreshing citrus flavours. The floral nose leads into a palate that is seamlessly balanced between soft Semillon fruit characters and a clean light finish.

Bright red fruits on the nose that open up onto a palate of raspberry, dark cherry and hints of savoury spices. Medium-bodied with soft tannins gives a fine acid structure to a long finish.

This is a fresh aperitif style Champagne yet, with a real weight, complexity and depth to it. Green straw in colour, it has a lovely, fine, delicate mousse and a long, persistent and driving finish. Lots of flavour and very crisp, this is serious serious bubbles!
