Wine enthusiasts often talk about ‘sense of place’ in wines. But what does that actually mean?
There are so many things that make wine more than ‘just a drink’. There’s the way it brings people together, its ability to enhance food and its power as a social lubricant. But arguably most interesting of all is how it can take us on a journey. Through tasting and comparing wines from different countries, regions, vineyards, we get little insights into that particular part of the world, with each new wine taking us an extra step.
There’s nowhere better to explore than France and Italy. Both countries have been tweaking and perfecting their winemaking for centuries, millennia even. The results are unparalleled understandings of ‘what works where’ in terms of grape varieties and styles. Moreover, it has produced a deep seated cultural connection to the wines they make.
France is without doubt the most famous winemaking country of all, with one benchmark style after another making it the envy of the world. Our October collection brings together four of those benchmark styles, from the perfect warm weather wine (Provençal rosé) via a pure and refined expression of Chardonnay (Chablis) to a traditional method sparkling wine (Crémant de Loire) and a very reasonably priced wine from one of the most famous regions in the world (Bordeaux).
Then, over in Italy, we find another contender for champagne’s place at the top of the sparkling wine tree (Prosecco). Prosecco might not have the depth and complexity of a top champagne but its bright fruit, easy drinkability and much friendlier price point make it hard to beat. And for red wine lovers we’ve found a classic Chianti at a very fair price, a relative bargain from a prestige region (Barolo) and an absolute bargain from a less heralded region (Puglia) that is everything you could hope for in a midweek wine.
