Australian Riesling is a in a very good place. Comparable in quality to the wines of Riesling’s heartlands of Germany and Alsace, it is distinctly different in style. South Australia’s Clare Valley led the way to international recognition with crisp, dry, citrus-laden wines but now we see great Riesling made in regions right across our vast country.
Two of the best are Tasmania and Western Australia’s Great Southern. Tasmanian Rieslings, due to their cooler-climate origins, tend to be brighter and fresher than their mainland counterparts, boasting superb purity, fragrance and focus of fruit, while Great Southern produces lean and classically structured wines with excellent potential for the cellar.
Best of all, Riesling remains one of the most undervalued, and therefore underpriced, grapes of all, so whichever style you prefer there are plenty of bargains to be had, as our collection shows.
