Cabernet Sauvignon’s spiritual home, and perhaps its true origin, is in Bordeaux, where it tends to be blended with other varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Australian Cab Savs are commonly made as single varietal wines, with Coonawarra and Margaret River heading most wine lovers’ lists of Cabernet regions.
Intense with distinctive blackcurrant and cassis flavours along with subtle cedar, cigar box and spice. The tannin structure is fine and elegant, while the complex flavours linger on the finish.

“Mellow perfume of blue and black berry fruits, bay leaf, pepper, mint, undergrowth. Soft sigh across the palate then tannins and herbal character weave through to a fine tug of tannin. I like the little detail in spice, wood and earthiness, but its that gentle fruit sweetness and sheets of softness to texture that woo most. Not particularly complex, but it’s a lovely, lovely thing to drink.” Mike Bennie

"It’s pure Margaret River. Gravel and blackcurrant, bay and cream. It rumbles and grumbles, as it seduces. There’s perfume aplenty, texture too, sets of tannin and a long filigreed finish. Reduction, toast, choc-mint, florals, black olives; all make appearances here. The cellar beckons." Campbell Mattinson

"This is an impressively endowed vin de garde that should age effortlessly for 20-30 years. How Anthony Barton continues to fashion uncompromisingly primordial Bordeaux that are always among the biggest and densest of all the St.-Juliens is beyond me, but he does it year in and year out. Moreover, when it’s time to set the price, he appears to have the consumer foremost in his mind. The 2004 is a classic Léoville-Barton meant for long aging. Concentrated, with loads of smoke, creme de cassis, forest floor, and earthy notes emerge from this impressive, but oh, so backward wine. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030+." Robert Parker

"It’s a beauty. It’s perfectly put together. It’s rich with berried fruit flavour and grunty with tannin; both at appropriate levels, both seductive in their own way. Minted, foresty berries with chocolate and woodspice characters. Maybe some herbs. It all just flows, it all just works. And it lingers. It’s made to last/cellar but it’s so well balanced, and so juicy with fruit, that it can be enjoyed now." Campbell Mattinson

"Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. I raved about the 2006 Château Grand Puy-Lacoste when I tasted it from barrel ten years ago. It has evolved a really quite beautiful, very classic Pauillac bouquet with vivacious blackberry, raspberry and wild mint aromas that deftly absorb the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, perhaps a more forward "GPL" than other vintages, but there is genuine fineness to the tannin and that backward finish has great precision. There is the substance to suggest that it will be a long-term Left Bank and you could probably broach it after another 3-4 years. Tasted January 2016." Robert Parker
