Shiraz is Australia’s favourite variety, and its big, bold and full-bodied reds from regions such as the Barossa Valley have helped put Australia on the world wine map. Its spiritual home though is France’s Rhône Valley, where it is known as Syrah and produces wines typically lighter in body and alcohol. Sometimes Australian Shiraz is labelled as Syrah to indicate its specific style.
Fermented in small open fermenters, with some whole bunches using wild yeast and hand plunged four times a day. The free run juice and pressings were barrelled separately and matured in tightly grained French oak puncheons for 12 months. Aromatic bramble jam, plums, raspberries and spice notes follow through to a rich palate with French oak adding weight, structure and complexity.

"I’ve liked a great many of the previous releases of this wine but this is my favourite of the lot. It’s a ripper. Balanced, well fruited, spice-laden, perfumed, floral and then sweetly exotic. It smells and tastes beautiful, and is so finely etched with tannin; it has everything exactly where you’d like it to be. I’d send a case of this straight into the pool room but I’d like my stash kept a lot closer to me than that and, besides, I don’t have a pool room anyway. Buy." Campbell Mattinson

Perfumed and savoury, with a dark fruit core, this is not your typical Barossa Shiraz. There's no jamminess or sweet, confected fruit, this is all about layers and complexity, with raspberry and blackberry fruit underpinned by gamey notes and spice. Excellent.
Item Code: ITM22134
Bright cranberries, blackberry and raspberry on the nose. The palate is loaded with ripe red berries and cherry with subtle oak characters. Smooth tannins add structure, balance and length. An elegant French red.
Item Code: ITM17430
Generous and bright red fruits with baking spices and darker plum notes. The ripe palate is well-pitched with a nice pencil-lead mineral quality, and firm tannin structure. Nice complexity on the finish too. Recommended.

"Bowled over by balance. It’s bold with flavour but everything here feels so well placed. It tastes of licorice, redcurrant, black cherries and peppery herbs, and while there’s a velvety/creaminess to the texture oak is not a major flavour contributor. Tannin spreads and runs through a good deal of the wine, almost always a good sign. Length, tick. Fabulous." Campbell Mattinson

'Hand-picked from Stone Well, Moppa (Barossa Valley) and the Eden Valley, wild-fermented with 25% whole bunches, not fined or filtered. Highly aromatic, with spicy/tangy whole bunch aromas, the full-bodied palate ticks all the boxes, with powdery tannins dusting the seductive black fruits. Overall line, length and balance spot on.' Halliday's Wine Companion

Adelaide Hills red at its finest. Aromas of blueberry and cherry fruit with

Wonderful Northern Rhone style Syrah - savoury, gamey meats, with dustings of white pepper and tobacco leaf. The palate is elegant and restrained but with great intensity, framed by fine-grained tannins. A long and savoury finish makes this wine very moreish. Outstanding.

"Old Eden and Barossa Valley vines, variously whole bunch/berry crushed, open-fermented, 15 day, matured in French barrels (20% new) for 12 months. A very classy bouquet full of dark berry fruits ex forest or hedgerow, and a stash of velvet to soften the impact of intense dark fruits. The quality of this magical wine comes from its controlled alcohol that takes any question of the heat of the battle by the scruff of the neck and discards it on the nearest landfill." Halliday Wine Companion

"Herb and spice notes sit deep within a pool of cherry, plum and clove. This velvety red pours on the charm, the fruit and spice characters married quite perfectly. Flavour and style are excellent. The only detraction is the warmth of the finish, though it’s by no means fatal. It’s a very good example of Yarra Valley shiraz." Campbell Mattinson

"Uses 35% whole bunches on the bottom of the fermenter, 2% viognier skins on top of the whole bunches, then 63% crushed/destemmed on top, left alone to ferment naturally until 2% baume left, then pigeaged, 3 weeks on skins in total, matured in new and used French oak for 18 months. This approach, coupled with 13.5% alcohol, results in a vibrantly fresh, fragrant and lively wine bursting with cherry fruit, spice and pepper. Now the journey in the bottle begins." Halliday Wine Companion

“This wine is a brand new release from Gundog Estate and the panel and I were thrilled to secure it as your cellaring six wine. It wowed us in every way imaginable: from the redolent nose, laden with black fruits and flora notes, to the palate; medium-bodied and beautifully balanced with a creamy texture and layers of appealing black fruit with top notes of violets and rose. The 2016 vintage scored 93-points in the 2019 Halliday Wine Companion, with a drink-by date of 2031, and we believe that the 2017 release is set for similar greatness and longevity, if you can resist the temptation to open it …” Sarah Linhart, Wine Plans Wine Buyer

"Grilled steak with pepper, herbs de Provence, almost a violet thing going on, black fruits, iron filings. Medium bodied, distinctly ferrous and meaty, almost bloody, seasoned with salt and herbs, streaks of gummy tannin, clean acidity, all that meat, blackness and herb on the finish. Dare I say it, the Rhône expression of Shiraz from Heady?" Gary Walsh
