Shiraz is Australia’s favourite variety, and its big, bold and full-bodied reds from regions such as the Barossa Valley have helped put Australia on the world wine map. Its spiritual home though is France’s Rhône Valley, where it is known as Syrah and produces wines typically lighter in body and alcohol. Sometimes Australian Shiraz is labelled as Syrah to indicate its specific style.
The nose displays youthful bright red fruit which continues onto the palate. The palate is abundant with red fruits with a wonderful integration with soft savoury tannins, and the acid creating a well balanced, medium-bodied Shiraz.

"I’ve liked a great many of the previous releases of this wine but this is my favourite of the lot. It’s a ripper. Balanced, well fruited, spice-laden, perfumed, floral and then sweetly exotic. It smells and tastes beautiful, and is so finely etched with tannin; it has everything exactly where you’d like it to be. I’d send a case of this straight into the pool room but I’d like my stash kept a lot closer to me than that and, besides, I don’t have a pool room anyway. Buy." Campbell Mattinson

"It’s not about me but: I love this wine. It’s built on acidity and spice as much as it is on fruit and tannin. It’s direct, it’s exotic, it’s meaty and floral, but it’s also laced with black cherry and fennel. It has velocity and tension. It is simply a beautiful, modern red wine in the best sense of the word(s)." Campbell Mattinson

“Black fruits, some red, a beautiful almost rosy perfume, throaty earthiness, oyster shell, spice and nuts, even some liquorice richness. It’s medium bodied, but fleshy and full in the mouth, filling the corners with lovely Hunter flavour, ripe tannin, and pippy boysenberried acidity. The spread of earthy tannin on the finish is particularly impressive. Beautifully done.” Gary Walsh

“Here’s a ‘classic’ Vat 9, and a ‘classic’ Hunter red.In fact, it would be hard to get more ‘classic’. Hasa lovely violet and vanilla perfume, a dusting ofpepper and spice, dried herb, boysenberry andraspberry, a lick of fine powdery tannin, brightpippy raspberry acidity, subtle earthiness, anda pretty red fruited finish of clean length andprecision. So charming. Sometimes you don’t haveto try too hard to impress.” Gary Walsh
