The point of difference that truly counts…
The Tasting Panel
Since 1946 the heart of The Wine Society has been wine selection for our Members.
Conducted initially by Dr Gilbert Phillips (our founder) and his passionate friends, it burgeoned quickly utilising some of the country’s most recognised wine palates (Max Lake - the list goes on).
To be the recognised independent authority on wine matters in Australia, underpins everything we do.
We are Australia’s only truly independent wine selectors and this is why;
- All wines submitted by our trade partners must go through a blind tasting conducted by The Tasting Panel;
- A blind tasting is when a wine is classified by variety and vintage e.g. 2008 Shiraz or 2006 Riesling;
- This wine is then tasted in a standard tasting glass (The Tasting Panel has no indication as to brand, region or sell price);
- Criteria is based on national show judging, a wine must achieve a score equivalent to national wine show bronze medal rating (15/5 out of 20 and above);
- If the wine averages this score (there are 3 judges tasting and marking the wines), then it can becomes part of our “wine inventory”;
- Only now is this wine able to be selected for sale to our Members.
Massive discounts, over loaded warehouses and personal favourites have absolutely no influence.
QUALITY is the only assurance.
Our Tasting Panel
There are six core members, these being Ian McKenzie (Chairman), Greg Melick, Toni Paterson MW, Lance Hogan, Paul Foster and Ian Walsh.
These world class palates have passed the world’s hardest exams, judged internationally and held long careers as winemakers.
Panel Tastings are conducted three times a month. The Panel rotates regularly to ensure we always have fresh palates – the use of guest panellists is integral and we utilise the skills of wine writers, other wine show judges and Duxes of the Len Evans Tutorial.
The Tasting Panel is our iron clad guarantee of quality, independence and integrity.
