Page 6-7: Australian Shiraz

Winter has arrived and so too has the desire to rug up over a comforting glass of red. Our drop of choice? A regionally distinct Shiraz.

When it comes to producing benchmark Shiraz, you can’t go past the Barossa and McLaren Vale. In the Barossa, two valleys – made distinct by their topography, climate and soil – create unique styles of wine; the warm climate and low rainfall of Barossa Valley creates wines of richness and depth of flavour, while the cool climate of Eden Valley produces wines of elegance and seamless acidity. McLaren Vale enjoys a Mediterranean climate with moderate winters and warm summers tempered by the close proximity to the sea, allowing growers to create rich wines of ripe fruit characters and balanced acidity. But these two regions aren’t alone in producing outstanding reds. Clare Valley, Rutherglen, Hunter Valley and Adelaide Hills are also making exceptional wines, particularly Shiraz. Whether you’re after a big, fruit-driven style or one of elegance, spice and earthiness, we’ve raided our cellars to find a range of Shiraz wines for the discerning palate.
