  • Goulburn Valley

    Warm climate/Elevation 130-300m
    Located in Central Victoria about 100km north of Melbourne and 50km east of Heathcote, the Goulburn Valley region experiences wildly fluctuating temperatures during the growing season. Excessive heated is mitigated though by an abundance of lakes and creeks for irrigation. The region is home to the oldest (and largest) plantings of Marsanne in the world.

    Primary Varieties: Shiraz , Marsanne, Cabernet Sauvignon.

    Important Wineries: Mitchellton, Tahbilk.

  • Yarra Valley

    Cool climate/Elevation 50-400m
    Less than an hour outside Melbourne, the Yarra Valley is one of Australia's most accessible wine regions. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the undoubted star varieties, both as single varietal table wines and in traditional sparkling blends. Shiraz and Cabernet are also grown with success

    Primary Varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz.

    Important Wineries: Coldstream Hills, De Bortoli Yarra Valley, Mount Mary, Oakridge Estate, Seville Estate, Tarrawarra Estate, Yarra Yering, Yering Station, Yeringberg.

  • Beechworth

    Cold climate/Elevation 400-500m
    The considerable interest attracted by Beechworth has been driven by the enthusiasm for the exalted wines of Giaconda, but there are other fine producers in the region too. Chardonnay is particularly successful here, producing wines of great elegance and complexity.

    Primary Varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz.

    Important Wineries: Giaconda, Amulet.

  • Rutherglen

    Hot climate/Elevation 160m
    Rutherglen in north-east Victoria is best known for its fortified wines, which are some of the finest in the world. Rutherglen is a region with an innovative spirit, which is seen not only in the uniqueness of its fortified wines but also in the wide range of varieties and styles it produces, from Durif to Riesling and from Chardonnay to sparkling Shiraz.

    Primary Varieties: Rutherglen Brown Muscat, Muscadelle.

    Important Wineries: Stanton & Killeen, Campbells, Chambers Rosewood, Morris.

  • Gippsland

    Cool climate/Elevation 30-100m
    Gippsland comprises the south-eastern underbelly of Victoria extending from Phillip Island in the south to the southern border of New South Wales to its northeast. This is an emerging region developed largely by small family wineries. South Gippsland Pinot Noir has a particularly lofty reputation, with some considering it amongst the very finest in Australia.

    Primary Varieties: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay.

    Important Wineries: Bass Phillip, Nicholson River.

  • Mornington Peninsula

    Cool maritime climate/Elevation 1-200m
    Located about an hour south of Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula is blessed with a cool maritime climate in which Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive. Though it is these varieties that have earned the region its premium reputation, others such as Pinot Gris and Shiraz are also making an impression

    Primary Varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Pinot Gris.

    Important Wineries: Paringa Estate, Stonier Wines, T'Gallant.

  • Heathcote

    Warm climate/Elevation 130-300m
    Situated between the Goulburn Valley and Bendigo regions in Central Victoria, Heathcote has made a real name for itself in recent years for its rich, velvety and often spicy Shiraz. Look out too for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier and Chardonnay, all of which are beginning to make their mark.

    Primary Varieties: Shiraz.

    Important Wineries: Jasper Hill, Heathcote Winery, Shelmerdine.

  • Macedon Ranges

    Cool climate/Elevation 500-690m
    The Macedon region, an hour's drive north east of Melbourne, is the coolest wine region on the Australian mainland. These cool temperatures make the region very well suited to the production of sparkling wines, though table wines are also produced with some success.

    Primary Varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Shiraz.

    Important Wineries: Bindi, Hanging Rock, Rochford, Mount Macedon Winery.

  • Pyrenees

    Warm climate/Elevation 350-450m
    Victoria's Pyrenees region is home to many diverse microclimates, which allows the cultivation of a wide range of grape varieties. Perhaps its greatest strength is its spicy and savoury red wines, though white varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grow well here too.
    Primary Varieties: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay

    Important Wineries: Dalwhinnie, Blue Pyrenees, Redbank, Taltarni.

  • Sunbury

    Cool climate/Elevation 35m
    Sunbury is a cool region of gently undulating plains located close to greater Melbourne's north-west boundary. The vineyards are mostly vertically shoot positioned to increase exposure to sunlight. The growing season is relatively cool and dry compared to the nearby Yarra Valley.

    Primary Varieties: Shiraz.

    Important Wineries: Craiglee.

  • Grampians

    Warm climate/Elevation 240-350m
    The Grampians region is famous for its natural beauty. Its wines are worthy of note too, such is their typical power, elegance, and ability to age. It is primarily a red wine region, with Cabernet and Shiraz leading the way, but there are good examples of white varieties such as Riesling and Chardonnay to be found here too.

    Primary Varieties: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay.

    Important Wineries: Best's, Mount Langi Ghiran, Seppelt Great Western.

  • Geelong

    Cool maritime climate/Elevation 10-100m
    Geelong was one of Victoria's pioneering wine districts, with the state's first commercial vintage produced here in 1845, before an outbreak of phylloxera put the budding wine industry on hold for almost 100 years. Today it is known for its Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays of exceptional complexity.

    Primary Varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir.

    Important Wineries: Bannockburn Vineyards, Jindalee Estate, Austins.
