Critic’s scores are not everything – personal preference will always be the most important thing – but when you see a line up like this, it’s hard to ignore them. That’s a lot of educated palates who think these are bloody good wines. And having tasted them ourselves, we wholeheartedly agree.
What makes it particularly remarkable is that it’s not that much of a surprise. Yes, we think this crop of Cape Mentelle wines is amongst the best ever but the consistency with which this winery
delivers exceptional quality is astonishing. Year in, year out, the wines are benchmarks for their region, indeed Australia.
A member of Margaret River’s ‘founding five’ wineries, Cape Mentelle has been perfecting its craft for almost 50 years. Its flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Australia’s great Cabernets. This wonderful wine was on another level in 2014, prompting Huon Hooke to draw comparisons with first-growth Bordeaux and to describe it as “possibly the best yet from Cape Mentelle”. That’s some endorsement and you can buy a dozen for the price of a single Château Lafitte!
If your budget doesn’t stretch quite that far, don’t worry. The other two 2014 Cabernet wines are amongst the best we tasted all last year. The Wallcliffe Cabernet & Cabernet Franc is an extraordinary wine of power and grace. It’s built on a structure that will see it live long in the cellar but only if you can keep your hands off it – it’s seriously good drinking now. And the Trinders Cabernet Merlot? Its quality is no surprise, until that is you take into account its price. We served it at a recent dinner hosted by our partners in food, delicious. magazine and it was the wine of the night.
The story is the same with whites. A classic Margaret River blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon that nails refreshment, flavour and complexity, all for a little over $20. And a powerful and concentrated Chardonnay that lingers and lingers on the palate. There are no weak spots in this collection, only preferences of style and budget. Fabulous winery; fabulous wines.
