Brrrrrr ... it’s late June as I write this and winter is definitely here in Sydney. I spent the long weekend up in the Blue Mountains in a cabin sipping wine by the fire, reading and eating cheese (ahhh, the life). I’m firmly back in the city now but it is a timely reminder to take some time out in these slower, colder months to reflect and enjoy the deeper things. I enjoyed a bottle of Marsanne Roussanne over the weekend. This style of white wine suits the winter months just so well. Drink it cool (not cold) and take your time. As the wine warms and the cheese softens, the experience really does delight. A great example of this style is the Rod McDonald One Off Marsanne Viognier, made in the Southern Rhône style and featured on page 6.
Then of course come the reds. The Geoff Hardy ‘Hand Crafted’ Malbec (page 3) was an absolute standout in a recent panel tasting. Both Ian McKenzie and I relished its juicy, fresh and lively approach to the variety. The Anon Pinot featured on the cover has been making quite a splash at home and with friends; it’s a Wine Society exclusive and we are very proud of the premium nature of the wine, especially at the price. One of our longest serving wine advisors (hi Liz!) says it drinks like a $60 bottle – my family and friends agree.
Enjoy the cooler months snuggled up with a nice glass and, as always, don’t hesitate to pen me a note with any feedback you might have at email@example.com.
