Thanks to wineries such as Woods Crampton, it is an exciting time to be a wine lover in this country.
Based in Australia’s traditional powerhouse region, Woods Crampton is one of a new breed, redefining Barossa wine, with an approach that respects traditions but is never constrained by them. Classics like Shiraz, Mataro and Riesling sit side by side with lesser known Iberian varieties, Graciano and Bonvedro. What connects them is the winemaking, which uses minimal handling to produce expressive wines that speak of place and variety.
Quality is always high, as can be seen by their consistent success with the critics, but just as important is the style, which emphasises on drinkability: these are wines to enjoy at the dinner table or any occasion with family and friends. Best of all, the prices mean you can do just that without taking out a mortgage for the privilege.
So when the sun is shining on Australia Day, you could do a lot worse than pull a bottle of the White Label Riesling from the esky while you get cracking on the barbeque. It’s focused and charged, spreading across the palate delivering an intense hit of lime juice, grapefruit and barely ripe nectarine and a gentle but insistent citrus acidity cutting through the gorgeously slippery texture.
And when the steaks and snags are ready? Take your pick. Any of these reds would work a treat but if we had to pick one, the juicy fruit combined with an earthy, almost meaty character of the Sleeping Dogs Dry Red is hard to go past. Of course, the smart move would be to mix a case and try them all for yourself. Y Ultimo ou won’t be disappointed.

"It’s a little cloudy, but has great colour. Spice, boysenberry, almost a gin botanicals perfume too, brown bread and chocolate wrappers. Medium bodied, fresh and perky, bright crushed berry flavour and spice, beautiful lightly furry tannin, settled acidity, and an aromatic and commanding finish of fine length. This has drinkability, value and complexity all sewn up. Strong recommendation." Gary Walsh

“Super value, as ever. Lillies and lemon barley, lime and grapefruit, punch and sure-footed, some crunch and chalkiness in texture, and a refreshing, slightly bitter finish that reminds of gin and tonic with a good hit of lime. Delicious. Good now too.” Gary Walsh
