Tasmania’s 2018 vintage looks set to be one to remember, for producers and consumers alike. Excellent growing conditions saw quality and quantity up, with a record 16,280 tonnes of high quality grapes harvested. The Island State produces less than 1% of Australia’s wine grapes but more than 4% of its value.
Lens Evans Tutorial
The scholars for the Len Evans Tutorial for 2018 have been chosen with 12 lucky wine professionals from winemaking, restaurants and distribution set to taste through the great wines of the world in November.
Set at the picturesque Tower Lodge in the Hunter Valley, scholars will be put through their judgingpaces by wine luminaries James Halliday and long-time Wine Society panel chair Ian McKenzie, among others, with the winner receiving a business class, all expenses paid, trip to tour the great wine estates of Europe.
With each scholarship worth over $9,000, most of which is spent on wine, it is no wonder that the Len Evans Tutorial has been dubbed ‘the most exclusive wine school in the world’.

The palate is layered with lemon curd from the Chardonnay fruit and delicate strawberries from the Pinot Noir, balanced by creamy notes from aging in bottle and the refreshing natural acidity for which the Pipers River region is renowned. A blend of the best Chardonnay fruit from the 2014 vintage. The fruit was whole bunch pressed and transferred to barrel for full wild fermentation (50% on new oak). "Hand-picked, whole berries and whole bunches open-fermented with gentle plunging. A wine that explains the love at fist sight when the Tolpuddle partners saw the vineyard. It comes flying through the weather of the vintage that trapped others with a highly perfumed red flower bouquet and into a layered palate reflecting the whole bunch/whole berry fermentation, spicy, savoury, foresty notes form a laurel wreath on the fruit, the oak integrated."
